After an assessment of the performance of the installation (envelop, ductwork and airflows), a total of 30 occupied dwellings has been monitored during two years since November 2007 to measure representative parameters for energy consumption and indoor air quality.

The monitoring has enabled to better understand the parameters which can influence the ventilation performance. The results have demonstrated the efficiency of the humidity controlled ventilation in managing the indoor air quality by measuring CO2 and humidity concentrations. Energy savings on the equivalent airflow for energy have been evaluated at 30% on the over-occupied monitored dwellings but the extrapolation to the average occupancy of the French building stock have shown to be around 55% energy savings, which is consistent with the theoretical calculation of the CSTB technical approvals.
At the installation first, as the airflow levels can be set to adapt to specific airflow requirements or to compensate a lack of pressure: a neutral position of the fixed shutter can be easily determined. The commissioning is also facilitated by the presence of a pressure plug which enables measurements and easy calculation of the airflow. The occupant can benefit from different functions (humidity sensitive, presence detection, switch) to adapt automatically the extract airflow. Composed of VBP, -a low pressure hybrid fan-, and humidity sensitive extract grilles and air inlets, the system optimises energy consumptions at all levels. First thermal losses are considerably reduced by the use of terminals which airflow is adapted to the occupants' needs; secondly, fan electric consumption, which is already very low (4W per dwelling), takes advantage of a renewable energy source by the use of PV cells. A first large project is being realised in Hungary.

Aereco Demand Controlled MEV equivalent to 80% Heat Recovery

A study conducted in 2008 by the Fraunhofer Institut Bauphysik (Germany) has shown that the Aereco Demand Controlled MEV system's energy performance was comparable with the one of an 80% heat recovery system. The results demonstrate that Aereco Demand Controlled MEV generates only 1070 kWh extra consumption per heating period than an 80% heat recovery system -equivalent to only 47 Euros-, in the conditions of the study. This represents much less than the cost of the annual filters change which is compulsory on the HR units to maintain their level of performance. In the long run, the initial extra cost of the Heat Recovery (supply and fit) in comparison with the Demand Controlled MEV is never paid back even without taking the required annual filters change into account. This study confirms the efficiency and the relevance of this system, in the new built as well as in refurbishment.
